Rockabilly, Psychobilly, & Pompadour Hairstyles

During the 30s, 40s and early 50s, the rockabilly hairstyle was in vogue.

In that time it was the strong and sensual attitude from men and women of the working class what set the trend, later on, even housewives and high class circles embraced rockabilly hairdos.

Betty Page and Elvis Presley are icon figures that wore these hairstyles as a trademark since rockabilly fashion was born in a subculture that followed rock and roll and fast cars.
These modern rockabilly hairstyles are an option to style your hair in this way and not necessarily cutting it in layers and bangs as many hairdressers consider is a must to have a successful rockabilly style.

Rockabilly for Men Johnny Cash and Frank Sinatra are perfect examples of rockabilly hairstyles for men.

Nowadays even women with short hair style it this way, like Pink and Rihanna.

Curly Hairstyles for Men

If you’re a man who’s been blessed with curly hair, smile! Women all over the world pay hundreds of dollars every month to pump chemicals into their hair, burning it to a frizz trying to make it look like yours-and you were handed your curly hairstyles on a silver platter!
That doesn’t mean that curly hair doesn’t get frustrating every once in a while, because it does. Curly hairstyles often have a mind of their own, ranging from the lanky, dragging curls sported by Mel Gibson in some sections of “Braveheart” to the tight frizz you see on Tom Hanks’ head in “Big“. If you’ve been letting your hair grow out into a “Surfer Dude” ‘do just to keep it tamed, relax. There are hundreds of options out there just waiting for you to make the most of them.

Shave it off. Hey, it worked for Justin Timberlake! The short buzz is back, and it quickly solves all of the options associated with your curly hair. It can’t frizz if it’s not there, right?

Keep it short. If you aren’t the type of person who enjoys walking around with their scalp shining through their hair, that doesn’t mean you’re doomed to a lifetime of ‘fro. Keeping it short (as in, 1″ or less) will create a trim collection of curls against your head that appears neat and tidy (or, in some cases, 100% curl-free).
If you want to keep your wavy locks but are sick and tired of struggling with them every morning, a little maintenance might be in order. If you’re like most men you hate the idea of spending hours dumping goop in your hair trying to make it behave (and you’ve probably already tried with gallons of hair gel before coming here).

This is the time to break out a little preventative maintenance. Do you remember when your Granny told you that an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure? She was right. There are literally hundreds of options available out there for out of control curly haircuts that will soften and relax your curls and make them easier to work with.

Stay away from hair dryers and combs, they’re just going to make your frizz worse. Instead, opt for a wide toothed brush (or comb if you absolutely can’t stand it) and comb it through with a touch of gel or ordinary conditioner after your shower. Allow it to air dry.

How to Moisturize Damaged Hair

Believe it or not, men spend as much time and as much money on their hair as women. After all, we want to look good to impress the ladies that catch our eyes. This means that men sometimes do things to their hair that leave it dry and damaged, just as women sometimes do. Here, we will look at a couple of simple tricks guys should know about how to moisturize damaged hair.

The simplest trick is to use conditioner each time we shampoo. Shampoo strips much of the natural oil away from hair during the process of cleaning the scalp. This often leaves hair dull, dry, and brittle. Conditioner is normally formulated to replace this oil and to add moisture that the oil holds in place back to the hair. Occasional deep conditioning treatments from a salon may also be helpful.

Another simple trick is to take a bottle of olive oil and coat the hair in it about once a week. Again, shampooing and styling often strips the hair’s natural oils away and leave it vulnerable to damage. Olive oil is very close to the oil that is produced by the scalp to protect the hair, therefore it will act in much the same way to protect the hair from further damage and help to repair any that has already occurred.

There are other things that men can do to moisturize their hair. These are just two simple tricks that use items that are normally already in the home to repair the damage done by normal washing, chemical treatment, and heat treatment used to style the hair.

Moisturizing damaged hair can help it to look good again, which is exactly what we want our hair to do as we want to impress our bosses and our ladies as much as anyone.

Crew Cut Hairstyles

A crew cut is a style of cutting the hair that starts with the hair one length in the front and tapers to a uniformly shorter length at or near the crown of the head. The sides and back can actually be of short or medium length, though when most people think of a crew cut, they think of a buzz cut.

Military Crew cut

Most people think that the crew cut gets its name from the US military. The truth of the matter is that the hair cut got its name from its adoption by the Yale rowing crew in the 1890s. This hair cut was not adopted by the military until World War II. It was then determined that a buzz cut with the sides and back cut short (high and tight) was a good way to eliminate lice and other pests that like to live in the hair.

Flat-top haircut

Some of the more notable variations on this style include the flat top, the buzz, and the butch. All three of these are classed as short haircuts because the longest hair is generally not over an inch in length. In fact, most cuts range from one quarter inch to three quarters of an inch in length.

When the game of football was first invented, the helmets worn by the players were somewhat flimsy, being made of leather. At that time, football players tended to wear their hair longer. Later, when the switch was made to hard plastic helmets, most teams, starting with Yale’s football team, adopted the crew cut for their players.

At some point during the mid 1960s, a man’s haircut became a symbol for his political beliefs. Men who wore long hair were considered to be liberal, often referred to as hippies whether they embraced the hippy movement or not. Men with more conservative views tended to wear their hair shorter, with the most conservative adopting the buzz cut.

Today, unless a man is in the military, it is not overly common to see anyone sporting a crew cut. There are a few, however, who tend to wear some variation on it, either a flat top or a buzz cut. In general, even now, these tend to be men with ultra conservative views as opposed to the more liberal who sport medium to long hair. Long hair does not carry the negative connotations that it did in the 60s and early 70s, but a buzz cut is still the mark of conservatism.

How To Do A Crew Cut

Learning how to do a crew cut is a simple matter that only requires a bit of practice to perfect. In order cut hair in this fashion, one should start with a belt and wrap it around the head at the height where the hair is to be allowed to become longer. For a high cut, mark the head at the top of the belt. For a low cut, leave the belt in place and cut to the bottom of it.

With a set of adjustable electric clippers, one should set the length of the cut to the shortest setting. This will result in a nearly shaved appearance. For slightly longer sides and back, adjust the length of the cut to a longer setting. Cut the hair below the belt or mark on the head from bottom to top with the clipper facing away from the head.

The next step is to put the longest guard available on the clippers and cut the top of the hair from back to front. As the clippers are moved forward, gently pull the guard away from the scalp so that the front hair is left a bit longer than the back. If this leaves the hair longer than desired, choose the next shorter guard and repeat this process.

Finally, replace the guard with one that is one size smaller. Use this guard to create a taper around the top of the head between the shortest hair and the hair that was left longer on top.

Military Haircuts for Men: Flat Top, High and Tight Haircut

Flat-Top Haircut

The flat-top military haircut is another one of the more popular military hair styles. The flat-top haircut is a style that is done to give the hair on the top of the head a flat appearance while the rest of the hair is shaved off. The hair on top will be kept anywhere from half of an inch to an inch tall. The men that choose this style in the military are the ones who would like to keep their hair just a little longer than the rest. For those men outside of the military who would like a military style haircut without having to nearly shave their head, the flat-top is the way to go. There are some other military haircuts, but these two are the most popular among the men who are in the military and the men who are not. Most of the other military haircuts are very similar to the two fore mentioned hair styles in this article.

How to Cut A Military Haircut
The edges of the military haircut define the cut. They are cut in what is commonly referred to as a high and dry cut. This means that the hairs around the back of the neck and the hairs around and above the ears are cut tightly along the growth of the natural hair line. There are no hairs left looking jagged or out of line, this cut is precise.

The entire head of hair is electric razor or clipper cut; this is also commonly called a buzz cut or crew cut. The cut itself is performed with an electric razor over a comb or with various sized attachments over the razor, these attachments are numbered. This is how some men ask for their trim: “I would like a number three on the top and a number one on the sides and in the back.” You can ask the professional stylist that is performing your hair cut what number guard or razor attachment they are using for your cut. This will help you to be specific when you return for a trim.

The hair around the top of the head and the crown should be kept slightly longer and it should be blended into a very tight cut around the ears and neck hairline. The top can be cut into a box effect which will be a flat top or the hair can be rounded to take the shape of the head. The top is usually left no longer than one or two inches in length and the sides and back are usually faded into a eighth of an inch or even bald.

How to Maintain the Hairstyle

Military cuts for men are one of the easiest cuts to maintain and keep looking great day after day. They are a wash and go look that consistently looks great with very little hands on or styling efforts. This is one of the reasons that so many men enjoy these cuts. The other reason that men enjoy these cuts is because they are so versatile. They look great with formal clothing and with casual clothing; these cuts look great at the beach and at a wedding; these cuts look great on children and on business men.

Maintaining a military haircut is fairly easy to do. Simply have the cut shaped up and the edges trimmed with an electric razor every few weeks. If the haircut is not consistently reshaped every four to six weeks (or sometimes even sooner) it will lose the sharpness of the cut and the style will begin to look sloppy and unkempt. There is nothing less professional looking than a man with a hair cut that looks totally great for several weeks and then awful before it looks great again. A true military cut is reshaped consistently and always looks sharp and cared for. The hair around the ears can also be shaped at home with an electric razor once or twice a week to keep it looking great each day.

Best Spiky Hairstyles For Guys

When it comes to style for men, their hairstyles are usually left behind. It is usually all about the clothes, all about the accessories and certainly about the shoes. That is why spiky hairstyles for men have become so popular because they are super easy to achieve. If you are a guy, you have at one point in your life, spiked up your hair a little bit just so you could keep it out of your eyes.

One of the greatest things about spiky hair is the fact that it looks wild and dangerous. This is what a lot of women really like about this particular hairstyle. While it may be easy to achieve most of the time for a guy, it can be difficult for some guys who simply have no idea how to spike up their hair.

Different Types Of Spiky Hair
There are literally hundreds of different hairstyles worn by men around the world. Some of styles that are gaining in popularity are spikey styles where part or all of the hair stands out from the head. Even in this category, there are many different options.

Mohawk

Jared Leto mohawk hairstyle.

One of the first hairstyles to include spikes was the Mohawk. This style consists of the sides of the head being shaved, leaving only a one or two inch strip of hair down the center of the head. There are a few variations on this that include more than one strip, but most people see the single strip when they hear the word, Mohawk. This style may be spiked in a fan where the hair stands up evenly or it can be separated into separate spikes known as Liberty spikes.

Faux-Hawk

Blake Lewis faux-hawk hairstyle.

The faux-hawk is a similar style with the difference being that the hair on the sides of the head is not completely shaved. Instead, the hair is cut shorter on the sides and left longer in the center stripe. This stripe can then be spiked in a fan pattern or Liberty spikes much like the Mohawk.

Emo Hair

Emo hairstyle.

Emo hair is normally cut unevenly with a razor, leaving a fringe in front that hangs down to cover one eye. However, there are no real rules governing these hairstyles. Therefore, many emo kids choose to put spikes into their hair in different patterns. Some spike all the hair, while others create a row of spikes at the crown that resemble the Statue of Liberty.

Punk Hair

Punk hairstyles.

Punk hair comes in all sorts of styles. The Mohawk is one of the original punk styles. However, individuals can also twist their hair into spikes or simply pull it up into a collection of messy spikes and still have a punk hairstyle. One of the keys to defines the punk style is the presence of spikes in the hair.

Porcupine Hairstyle

Billy Idol porcupine hairstyle.

Porcupine spikes are named thus because they stand up all over the head like the quills on a porcupine. These are smaller at the base than Liberty spikes and there are many more of them on the head. The hair is styled into random spikes that stand up all over the head.

Flat Top

One style that many do not think about as a spiky hairstyle is the flat top. This is a short hairstyle that is based on the crew cut. The sides and back are cut extremely short and the top is left a little longer with the sides and front being tapered so that the entire top is uniform in appearance. The hair is short enough that it stands up in spikes all over the top of the head.

Firstly, you need to make sure that you have the right hairstyle & the right length for it. Most of the time, it is either too short or too long. This is something that you should be discussing with your hair stylist, as they are the people that should be cutting your hair.

Buzz Cuts – Very Short Hairstyles for Men

The buzz cut seems to stay in style. No matter what the latest style trend is, you still see the buzz cut everywhere. Why not? This is a great opportunity for a man to get a whole new look. It is also a perfect way to start off the summer, nice and cool.

You really can not ask for an easier to maintain hairstyle. The buzz cut is virtually maintenance free. You can literally have your hair dry with a towel in a matter of seconds. No fussing with gels and sprays and never a need for blow drying. The best part is that you can stop worrying about those bad hair days. With a buzz cut you can always know what to expect.

The buzz cut is a very simple and generally quick hair cut. It gets it’s name from the sound that the clippers make while the hair is being cut. Believe it or not, the buzz cut does come in different lengths. Some people prefer to have a shorter cut. In this case a shorter clipper attachment is used. This allows the clippers to get closer to the head, causing a closer cut.

Having a buzz cut does not mean foregoing style. There are many available. Some people prefer to have only the sides buzzed, while leaving more hair on top of the head for styling. This will allow for many different looks depending on if the hair is straight or curly, thick or thin.

It seems that at times of heightened military awareness, the buzz cut has a resurgence of popularity. Obviously, for those in the service this is out of obligation. However, it seems that this serves as a reminder to many individuals of how much simpler this would be to maintain. Not to mention that it is a nice clean cut look.

Will A Buzz Cut Look Good On You
If you’re one of those men who prefer short hair, there may be just one big question on your mind: will a buzz cut look good on me? Can I pull off the buzz haircut? This short style is now worn by many popular actors and musicians, and there’s never been a better time to consider following this exciting trend.

Still, not everyone looks good in a dramatically short haircut. In general, there are some facial characteristics and head shapes that work better with this style of haircut than others. There are also certain head shapes and facial appearances for which this choice could be a huge mistake.

Facial Shapes
Men for whom this style can work include those with oval faces and rounder heads. It is also a perfect choice for those who have longer faces or oblong head shapes, since the shorter hair can detract attention away from the length of the head. For men with over-sized skulls, a short cut can actually make the head look smaller.

How To Do A Buzz Cut

Fortunately, the creation of home models of electric clippers has made this process simpler than it once was. Most clippers come with an assortment of guards that can be snapped over the blades to ensure a uniform cut over the entire head. The best one is Oster Professional 76023-510 Fast Feed. Why? The adjustable blade allows you to quickly change the length of cut from very close to medium length, the clipper has a pivot motor so it has more power than average clipper on the market, it can cut wet & thick hair easily but run pretty quiet.

Most people like to start out with a number two guard. All one has to do is turn on the clippers with the guard in place and start cutting the hair against the direction of growth. This means moving the clippers up the back and sides and working from front to back on top. This process should be taken slowly in order to avoid pulling the hair. Give the blades time to do their work.

In many cases, this is the end of the hair cut. However, many choose to go shorter still. Turn off the clippers and remove the number two guard. Put on a number one guard and turn the clippers back on to continue shortening the hair.

If this is not close enough, one can continue using smaller guards or remove them altogether and place the blades directly against the scalp. This usually will not cut as close as shaving with a razor, but will leave the hair about as short as it is possible to get it without using a razor.

Some choose to do variations on this cut. A crew cut, a flat top, and others are hairstyles that are based on the buzz cut. The differences come into play by the amount of hair left on top and how it is trimmed. In most cases, it is better to leave these cuts to an experienced professional. However, for a uniform cut over the entire head, anyone can do this using the guards on the clippers at home.

Many professionals recommend wetting the hair before doing a buzz cut. This makes the hair softer and pulls it out straighter so that the cut will be closer to the scalp when the hair dries. However, this method works best after one has gained some experience in cutting the hair in a buzz style.

Learning how to do a buzz cut is not difficult in this modern age. Most home hair cutting kits contain the necessary guards to perform this cut without any special skills. One can simply snap the appropriate guard onto the clippers and begin cutting. The important element is to take it slow and let the clipper cut the hair rather than pull it. One can select the length the hair will be left by selecting shorter or longer guards. With experience, one can even perform other hair cuts such as the crew cut, flat top, or the high and tight worn by many military personnel.

circle haircut or layered haircut

It's a staple of the stylist's arsenal, and probably the most versatile and basic haircut in history.

A short circle cut is sassy and bouncy, while a long circle cut gives volume to the style.

Step One: Wet the hair and section it in the standard seven-sections: left side, top, right side, left crown, right crown, left nape and right nape.

(see photo) Step Two: Starting at the nose, decide how long to cut the hair.

Comb these sections down and once more starting in the center back, slice a section of the hair vertically and comb it out- ward at a downward angle.
Re-comb and take a new slice of hair that includes part of the section you've already cut.

Hold the hair straight out from the head and cut the hair vertically.

Beginning at the front of the head, comb a slice of the hair up from the forehead on both sides to assure that the segment is centered on the head.

Once you've checked the haircut thoroughly, style the hair as desired.
